Like my son, Shaun Murphy's greatest problems are the the ignorance and prejudice of NTs. The final episode of Series 1 is one of the finest set pieces I've ever seen in television reflecting a depth of storytelling and a cast at the peak of their abilities.
Freddie has captured the neurological tics and rich inner life of so many autistic people so well it's hard to believe he isn't an Aspie himself.
An obviously fiercely intelligent decent young man and truly one of the finest actors of his generation, he is always a pleasure to watch.

Only thing to add is the stellar work of Richard Schiff, particularly in the final episode. Fell in love with Freddie Highmore in the movie, August Rush, which is in my top He amazed me as Norman Bates in Psycho.
He is an incredibly gifted actor. If the pilot is any example of what is to come, we are in for a real treat. The kind of treat that comes from putting together a great writing team, talented and sensitive actors, and a lot of heart.
Here's hoping for a good long run of The Good Doctor. He is the magic. I do not like everything about the show, but they are getting the hang of it.

I love this show! I love the nuances of the autistic surgeon, and innocent in the midst of wolves. The hospital politics are so real. The supporting characters are beautifully realized - the surgeons and administrators with their bloated egos which does endanger patient lives , and the lone female who is so nice that she shoots herself in the foot but nice enough to give this different surgeon space and becomes his first peer advocate.
I can see, after 5 years or so, how a hospital staff would rally around this autistic surgeon and love him for what he is. I do believe that we have yet to fully understand autism, and am happy to see a supportive role model in this character.

A point of interest here, at least to me, is that there are three British actors playing Doctor here. But only one uses their birth accent. Some storylines presented here are quite emotionally effective.
Another cast member, the lady from The Day After Tomorrow, is also excellent. Nicholas Gonzalez does a good job of playing the experienced doctor.
Finally Richard Schiff, the dad from Deep Impact and the unlucky Eddie in Jurassic Park, part 2, is exemplary as the sage-like father figure.

Freddie Highmore executes the role with absolute precision. It addresses the stigma, the bullying, the rejection, the intolerance and the dismissal of those with autism but also shows the kindness of some and the ability to believe in wonderful and amazing talents.
For where would we be without autism? No groundbreaking changes to science and technology from Tesla and Einstein, no music from Mozart, no acting genius from Daryl Hannah and Dan Aykroyd.
This is both realistic and heartwarming. With all the drama of ER and Grey's Anatomy, but with the glorious touch of an autistic doctor who just wants to save lives the only way he knows how, through sheer logic and observation, I cannot wait to watch many more episodes to come!

I don't usually watch programmes like this but it's nice to see they used a character that has a back story to them. Not only did the character have a traumatic history but he was also has Autism.
I have high functioning Autism myself. Every person with Autism are all different. Just nice to see them using an autistic character especially in a professional role.
