Despite the absence of subtitles I thought the film deserves 5 stars after all before the invention of the Digital Versatile Disc player we would have to watch any film at the cinema without subtitles.

It focuses on a couple of survivors travelling though the very bleak post-apocalypse of America which has been ravaged by the vampire-zombie creatures.

It's all very atmospheric and creepy and feels kind of heavy, which in one respect works well to show the pretty depressing landscape for what it is, and in another can sometimes just slightly tip the film into being a bit of a 'downer', but there's enough action with pretty good performances to carry it through and the bad guy leading the brotherhood who are using the creatures for their own evil gains gives the film a good third wheel to focus on.

Instead of following the usual Zombie path, this gives the pandemic a vampire focus and the occaisional documentary voiceover helps add to the generally bleak and eerie atmosphere.

The first disc holds the film and opens to 3 trailers and a chocolate ad! Before going to main screen offering, play, scene select, extra features [2 commentaries] and set up [5.

The second disc is full of extra features. Imagine if vampires and zombies were one and the same and that's the basic gist of the movie. Along the way they meet a few people and make enemies of the Brotherhood who use the Zombies to take out populations by dropping them from helicopters or crashing them with trucks.

Mister can be a bit full of himself sometimes, and on a few occasions I was hoping he would be killed right there and then, but overall the movie is very entertaining and it's a shame more people haven't heard of it.

Jebediah Loven, the leader of the Brotherhood, is a very satisfying bad guy you may end up liking more than the so called "good guys". A good, fun, different twist to the zombie apocalypse end of the world movie.

The themes have been done before, the motifs of religion, family bonds etc have all been touched upon.

So in order to make this more than an updated vamp flick, what have we got? Not a lot. Episodic to the extent it would sell well as a movie for the tv, or as a series; it recalls the passage of Lost or similar.

To what end? Well i can't give spoilers as theres not enough narrative or quotable flair to pass on to others.

Its heavy, plodding and interspersed with standard bad-guy monsters. Perhaps its designed to appeal to a tv minded teenager, as i cannot see anything of substance to this.

Even the acting is a remove away from conveying true emotions, as every one seems to be selling the same tone, and that tone is 'miserable'.

Insufficient variety, distinct lack of drive or flair of ingenuity, lack of any sense of having gained anything other than 'after the world goes to hell, everyone will not enjoy themselves in a nineteenth century way'.
