Mazzio places the story of the Manley rowing team in the context of their backgrounds, with brief stories about their lives and even broader details about how people growing up in gang-influenced communities have worse PTSD rates than soldiers that serve in combat, a number that has to have risen in Think about the last four months.

What will do to our youth? All of the young men, many with kids of their own now, are open and honest about their backgrounds and how this one change in their trajectory altered everything going forward.

Common may do the narrating but Mazzio lets her subjects tell the story. She turns it over to them in every way, much like their coaches allowed them to row the boat themselves.

And they do so together beautifully. James is our most empathetic documentarian, a man who can bring out the stories in people who would never consider themselves worthy of a feature film.

Like James, Mazzio understands how to give people space to express their joy and fear in equal measure, and her honest interest in Arshay Cooper and his best friends comes through in every frame.

Like the ripples from an oar, moving gently across the water. Note: Chaz Ebert was an Executive Producer on this film but had no influence on this review.

You can feel his passion for the sport in his explanations of the mechanics and how it made him feel. I rowed for two and a half years, and many of his passages about learning the sport, the exhilaration and pain of racing and the bond you form when you have a good boat was amazing to read.

The only reason this isn't five stars is sometimes he veered a little too hard into "motivational speaker" territory, and inserted inspirational dialogue for his teenage self that is was a little too corny for me.

Jul 10, Leighellen Landskov rated it really liked it Shelves: read-in , black-author , memoir. Despite everything, I still believe in seizing the moment and that an opportunity is a gift.

But it offered a way out, a way out of the only life they knew that was daily filled with gang violence, drugs, and fear. They tour college campuses, train in gyms, and learn to swim.

At one point they had trouble being admitted to a restaurant for food! In !! But overall, the coaches believe in them and it encourages these boys to believe in themselves.

They begin to want more and start to think they can really get it if they work hard enough. Sep 12, Elizabeth Holihan rated it it was amazing.

What an incredible read. It is devastating and wonderful; heartbreaking and inspirational. The number of challenges these student-rowers have to face is innumerable: being poor, a minority, not having a support system, having broken and substance-using families, being in an under-funded school, living through gang violence and seeing death from a young age.

The list goes on. These boys What an incredible read. These boys had to face these challenges on a daily basis just to survive.

The epilogue made me so happy and simultaneously broke my heart. The stories of the men who are doing everything right, and still experience violence and death is unacceptable and tragic.

I am very excited to see the documentary and learn more about the Manley Rowers. Jun 29, Crystal Zavala rated it it was amazing Shelves: publisher , audio.

I love reading non-fiction, but I rarely enjoy reading books about sports. The intensity and competition doesn't appeal to me. I was convinced to read The Boys in the Boat a few years ago and I was surprised that I enjoyed it, so when I saw that A Most Beautiful Thing is about high school boys who had never rowed before, I decided to give it a try.

It is so hard to imagine living right on Lake Michigan and never spending time on the lake or learning to swim.

However, that was and still is normal for Arshay and his friends living on Chicago's West Side. Arshay grew up with surrounded by the tough streets of Chicago, but didn't feel the pull towards the street life like many of his friends.

He wanted to graduate, become a chef, and write poetry. When Arshay hears about free pizza at lunch, he can't help but go and see what is going on.

His high school is starting a crew team and he has no idea what that is, but he is fascinated by the coaches and their investment in the idea.

Arshay decides to give it a chance and probably changes the trajectory of his life. He becomes part of the first Black high school rowing team in America!

You will learn how much hard work rowing takes, especially to get as good as this high school team did. But this is also about their daily lives and the harsh environment they grew up in.

They came together for a team but became a family. Even when talking about the harder parts of his life Arshay is never negative.

You will care and root for everyone. I think this would be a great book for young adults to read.

Oct 03, Amelia Newcomb rated it it was amazing. A most beautiful book in every way. I highly recommend it. The spirit of the author, who grew up in very rough circumstances on Chicago's West Side, is something to emulate.

You don't have to be into rowing to read this. I couldn't put it down and I continue to think about the many insights it offered. It's also a quick read.

And -- there's a related documentary by the same name, about how the team came back together 20 years after high school, and the impact they had.

At about the same time along comes Ken a wealthy white benefactor giving back by starting a rowing team at Manley HS where football and basketball rule.

Offered free pizza Arshay and a few of his friends go for the free food and end up joining the rowing team. They quickly learn rowing is a physically demanding sport requiring lower and upper body strength beyond anything they had ever experienced.

Rowing also requires one mind and one heart moving through the water. If one loses focus the whole team is thrown off. Arshay knows bringing this team together will be no easy feat.

Through trial and error, blood, sweat and tears the Manley rowing team discover a world outside the boundaries of color, violence, and poverty and find through hard work and people who believe in them they are worthy of all the good that life has to offer.

Through the eyes of Arshay Cooper, the reader not only experiences the day to day struggles and trauma of those living in the rough neighborhoods of Chicago's west side, but also the normal but unreachable dreams and wishes of the youth as they navigate their social, familial, and academic duties.

It is very difficult to be part of that society without being part of a gang but these 5 young students found that way.

Through the crew team, along with the help of Ken Alpert and Coach Jessica and later Coach Marc, they learn the value of working very hard toward something that is greater than themselves.

It is a study of the remarkable discipline, hope and perseverance of group of forgotten boys living in a less than average environment.

Oh and I forgot to say, this is the story of the first all black crew team - the brilliant experiment of a small group of committed former college crew members and funders who believed in the power of working as one.

Jul 22, Melanie rated it it was amazing Shelves: own-it. What a great book, loved this from page one and practically devoured it! So inspirational, well written and captivating.

Jul 18, Michael rated it it was amazing. In a year in which not much has been positive comes the story of Arshay R-Shay Cooper and a group of high school boys from an undesirable part of Chicago.

Adopted by a former collegiate rower the boys learn the sport of rowing and grow as a team and as individuals. Jul 11, Jill rated it it was amazing.

Jul 09, Katie Lawrence rated it it was amazing. It is beyond inspirational. Arshay Cooper, and all his teammates overcame tremendous odds to become a team and compete.

What they had to deal with is hard to fathom, and sadly, it continues today. But so many good people reached out and helped them.

Arshay writes from his heart. It is at times heart-breaking, and at others heart-warming. Jun 25, Haley Baker rated it really liked it.

I throughly enjoyed this book. The author, Arshay Cooper, is a black teenager in high school. His life is hard.

His family life is complete chaos. They are very poor. They live in a gang-infested area that is as violent as any war zone. He has such a good heart and wants very much to rise above his situation but has no tools and no idea where to get the tools to break the cycle.

His sc I throughly enjoyed this book. His school is offered a chance to develop a rowing program. The coaches recruit some very reluctant students.

These kids form the first all-black crew team. Initially, the boys are resistant to a lot of what is expected of them. Slowly, they start to form a team.

This story is full of hope. The odds seem overwhelming but as each of these kids puts one foot in front of the other they make amazing progress.

The book is very timely as well. The issues young black men face today are the same as the kids from the team faced 20 years ago. Jul 07, Nina rated it really liked it Shelves: Time and time over, you read books about the importance of the investing in communities, especially in communities of color.

Arshay tells his story, and how in the midst of the crack epidemic, life in the West side of Chicago was not easy, absent fathers, drug addicted mothers, drug dealers on every corner.

Life for kids could be very predictable Arshay and a few others got into rowing just because a rowing coach happened to want to put together a rowing team.
