Everyone is horrible all the time-so when they do horrible things to each other, the result is a chuckle rather than a vicious bite.

The music business is cutthroat, we get it. Christy Lemire. Adam Graham. Watching "Kill Your Friends" unfold is not dissimilar to being at a party where someone's clever one-liner lulls you into a conversation that reveals a bitterly immature, dismissively one-note lout, after which you're trapped.

Robert Abele. Anchoring the pungent s ambience is Mr. Hoult, easily oozing cool charisma. Andy Webster. Though the script is full of arch, darkly funny observations, the movie gets stuck on the same clanging chord of all-hating cynicism.

Kyle Smith. A more disagreeable collection of cynical, backstabbing, self-aggrandizing, shallow, vicious and vile specimens of humanity gathered together in a single motion picture would be difficult to conceive of.

Soren Andersen. As Stelfox pulls out of situation after situation through increasingly deplorable behavior, what feels giddily transgressive to begin with becomes simply numbing.

Oscar Goff. Niven's novel is acerbic, but onscreen it plays as toothless, boring, predictable. Thom Denson. A rancid cocktail of misogyny, homophobia, and much more besides, that never convinces as scathing satire as much as back-slapping celebration.

How did you buy your ticket? View All Videos 2. Title: Kill Your Friends I loved the book. The book is laugh-out-loud funny. The problem with this cinematic adaptation is that there are only a few laugh-out-loud moments.

Tone is the problem. The opening sets up the tone as dark and unpleasant and the main character as thoroughly unlikeable.

We have to spend an hour and a half with this guy? It's like having to sit beside a racist drunk on a night bus. But it's hard to not like Nicholas Hoult and the scathing honesty of his character and the film did grow on me - perhaps like a tumour.
