One person found this helpful. Spoiler Alert!!!! I did enjoy this movie. The only thing that was hung up a better rating was the plot.
It was a very odd plot I don't know if it was part of the feeling the director wanted the viewer to have or just a bad direction they took with this movie.
Shoving dad off just because you don't want to tell him that Davids in trouble is crazy! Or Rosie hiding you had a child and finding a fake apartment to stage as your own added to weird unbelievable vibe.
Amy acting still married and not separated to her cheating spouse?! So many head scratchers here. Saying this it was not a horrible movie it defiantly makes you stop and self reflect how fast your children grow up and what you say to them has deep long affecting impact on them.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I really enjoyed this movie and thought Robert De Niro's performance was impeccable.
And I did find myself shedding a few tears to this, in the privacy of my bedroom of course. The acting of the other actors is fantastic.
The plot was interesting and mysterious, which I enjoy in a film. My favourite part of the film was when De Niro is sat round a table with his children who to him are still seen as children - it's a very touching moment.
And shows the struggles of a father letting go of his children and accepting that they are now adults. If you are a De Niro fan - as I am - you will certainly enjoy this movie.
But I'm sure any of you who are not particularly familiar with De Niro would still enjoy the film - as long as you can cope with all the heart wrenching secrets embedded in the film that are all unveiled at the end of the movie.
Report abuse. What a terrific little film this is with Mr De Niro in tip top form. All the performanes are excellent but it is De Niro's show all the way and he does it so well.
Really heart-warming moments with a few that are likely to bring a few tears to the eye, but never over done. A real little gem that I find amazing has not, as yet anyway, been given a Blu Ray release.
One of Robert's best performances for several years and a must for your collection. Sit back, relax and enjoy a 90 minute glow all over!!
Very happy with purchase. Excellent film recommend. Particularly anyone with kids. Not a bad film about a family's secrets easy to watch not one I'd rush back to watch again.

Despite warnings from his doctor, Frank takes a train to New York City , to see one of his sons, David.
David does not appear to be home and never shows up so Frank leaves him a card and leaves town to see his other children.
While he is waiting for David, he sees one of David's paintings in a nearby art gallery window. His next visit is to daughter Amy in Chicago , who tells him it is a bad time to visit.
She had turned down her father's earlier invitation to visit, saying that her son Jack was sick. However, once he gets to Amy's house, Frank realizes Jack was not sick and Amy was just making up an excuse.
Frank hits a few golf balls with Jack in the yard of their impressive suburban home. Dinner is uncomfortable with tension between Jack and his father.
The next morning, Frank accompanies Amy to her fancy downtown office and hears her agency's pitch for a TV ad. She takes him to the train station to visit his son Robert in Denver.
While waiting, Amy introduces her father to a male co-worker. As Frank travels to each of his children's homes, the film cuts to phone conversations between the siblings.
David is in some type of trouble in Mexico , and Amy is going there to find out what is happening; the sisters and Robert agree to not tell their father about David until they know for sure.
Frank arrives in Denver expecting to see Robert conduct the city's orchestra. It turns out Robert is "only" a percussionist. Robert also tells Frank his visit is at a bad time, as the orchestra is flying to Europe the next day, but this is a lie.
So within hours Frank prepares to take a bus to Las Vegas to visit his daughter Rosie. Frank is adamant that each visit be a surprise, but Robert calls Rosie to warn her of his arrival.
After missing his train, Frank arrives in Las Vegas late, catching a ride part-way from a female truck driver. In a lonely hall of the bus station, during an encounter with a drug addict, Frank offers money to the drug addict.
He takes it but they get into a quarrel about him being grateful for Frank's gesture. Through physical force, the drug addict tries to take all of Frank's money but fails.
As a result, Frank's medicine bottle falls on the floor. To retaliate, the drug addict stomps on the medicine and crushes them.
Frank scrapes up some of the crushed pills because he must take his medicine on a daily basis. He calls his doctor for a prescription refill but does not tell the doctor that he is hundreds of miles from home, traveling against doctor's advice.
He has a dream that David is in trouble. Rosie meets him at the station in a stretch limo and tells him she was in a big show that ended the previous week.
She takes him to her huge, fancy apartment, where her friend Jilly brings over her baby for babysitting. Parents need to know that you care about them.
It only takes a phone call to keep communication open. The moview starts out slowly but if you stick with it, you'll find yourself completely engrossed in the plot.
Robert DeNero is on his game and as wonderful as he always proves himself to be. He doesn't play a "tough guy" in this film, but his acting skills are 5 star, as usual.
The all-star supporting cast members also bring their A-game and their characters are interesting and believable. The movie is actually quite good.
The reason I can only give it a 4 star rating is because the description of the movie tells you that you'll laugh and cry during the film, but in reality, there are not many laughs or even smiles, there are just a lot of tears.
I'm talking about an entire box of tissues worth of tears. If you enjoy tear jerkers, you'll love the movie I'm a parent who needs a few laughs with the tears and since I didn't find anything humorous in any way, shape, or form, I can only give it 4 stars.
I almost want to call it false advertisement because it clearly said to expect laughter and tears in it's summary preview, but all I did was cry The plot was good, the acting was great, and my tears were abundant.
I was exhausted from crying so much. It's a very well written script with a plot and acting that will not disappoint Great story, wrong lead.
Perfect for Robert Redford. De Niro, the worst possible person to play the lead part. This film was perfectly written for Robert Redford. Hands down!
De Niro just doesn't have what it takes to portray a father good or bad. It's really unfortunate for all of the film industry support persons that worked to make this film.
Time to pull the plug De Niro. One person found this helpful. Spoiler Alert!!!! I did enjoy this movie.
