Dec 25, John Woo's epic movie about the historical Chinese battle at the red cliffs has everything you expect from a film of such a scale: interesting characters that grow on you, a great soundtrack, huge spectacle and gorgeous shots, lots of surprisingly unbloody fights and battles, some of which are of course as exaggerated and silly as expected from Asian cinema.

Even the shorter cut of the film feels a bit long in the middle part. But the final battle and all the tactics that come with it are really great and offer very enthralling entertainment.

It all culminates in an almost Tarantino-esque standoff between the main characters that literally has you on the edge of your seat.

Thankfully, while some of his trademarks can be found throughout the film, Woo does not go overboard with his slow-motions or dramatically flying doves.

In blu-ray, one can appreciate the cgi effects even more. As a story, this truly was epic with battle scenes that are savagely beautiful to watch like a violent ballet of martial arts.

Because I don't understand Chinese, I was able to focus on the expressions on the actors while reading the subtitles. The cast was well chosen and well acted.

Based upon a pivotal moment in Chinese history, the story comes alive under John Woo's skillful direction. Red Cliff continues to stand out as the best of the best.

A long and very involved film that deserves all the accolades heaped on it. If you just want a slash-em-up samurai film, forget it.

If, on the other hand, you want complex plots, double cross, conniving, devious twists, supported by fantastic camera work and brilliant battle scenes, then this is the film for you.

Don't be put off by the TV showings of this film, they have been hacked to hell and back to fit the schedules. This two disc set includes all the bits that make the film make sense.

At just over four and a half hours it's a long film but I do strongly recommend that it is seen all in one go to get the best out of the experience.

Written by Anonymous. I cannot understand how the previous poster could feel that way about this gorgeous epic. Everything they said they hated were things I thought were well done, and wonderful about the film.

Of all the people I've shared this DVD with, they've all thought it was an amazing movie also. Ever camera shot was gorgeous.

The angles were unique, without wasted punch-ins or b-roll. It's rare to find films so tastefully shot.

The color was stunning, and the interpretation of the classic tale was unique and never disappointing. Meanwhile, With all the characters, the actors each held such a powerful presence.

It's very tough to develop any character singularly while you have so many important characters with their own mythos and chronicles, but each actor really held up to their image and that of the character.

Zhou Yu was never a character I've cared for, but here, he's likable and strong. The best "fresh" interpretation though was that of Guan Yu.

Instead of being "just another" honourable and strong warrior, he's rather a warrior-scholar, more intelligent, and more personality than ever before.

My only true quarrel is that it ends prematurely that is, until we see the 2nd half in I just wish they could have done the whole saga instead of this little piece.

Thank you John Woo for one of the finest Three Kingdom movies ever! I believe this is a great direction for your talents! You've woven the action you're so famous for with a deep, heartfelt classic tale!
