Unfortunately, that begins to peter out by the second act, when things take a turn for the weird and they all wind up alone in the titular lodge with no power and no food and all of their stuff missing.

This may also be why the treatment of mental illness and PTSD here felt … pretty exploitative and gross to me. Between this and what I have heard about The Turning , it is not a good year for lowkey or not, in that case remakes of The Turn of the Screw.

The Lodge is probably too well made to be entirely bad. It does several things extremely well, one of which is that the movie has exactly two settings: blindingly white or browns so dark that they devour all light.

One or the other. For me, the best time I had during the whole movie was that Hammer logo up front and while the characters were watching The Thing on TV.

Besides his work as Monster Ambassador here at Signal Horizon, Orrin Grey is the author of several books about monsters, ghosts, and sometimes the ghosts of monsters, and a film writer with bylines at Unwinnable and others.

All of the actors are entirely unmemorable and deliver their lines with the striking awkwardness of a broken robot.

Seriously, every single line has a minimum of one characteristic that makes it sound wrong. In the original, each teen stood out a bit and had a somewhat distinct personality the boy meets world guy, the squirrel hunting bb gun guy, the asshole rich guy , but in the remake everyone is equally wooden and undeveloped; as such they all blend into one and at times I forgot who was supposed to be who from the original.

In addition, there is no chemistry between any of these people. As others have pointed out, it's like they grabbed a bunch of totally random people who had no idea what this movie was supposed to be like and said "ok, just do whatever".

This leads to the other major problem: if you've seen the original than you'll remember how some of the scenes happened. Thusly, you immediately realize how wrong every single one feels in the remake.

All of the memorable parts of the original now feel either forgettable, rushed, cheesy, stupid, or all of the above. Additionally, its almost as if they consciously decided to remove lines and parts that really defined the original!

I went back and checked out a few scenes from the original and they're much more cohesive and inventive than this new, sterile crap.

As others have said, this completely lacks any of Eli Roth's trademarks and feels like some guy trying to be Roth but completely missing the point of the original movie and what made it notable and entertaining.

Lastly, they completely ruined the character of Deputy Winston aka party cop who, despite being a minor character, was hilarious and extremely memorable in both Cabin Fever 1 and 2.

You just can't replace Giuseppe Andrews on this one. In the remake they changed the character to a woman who was easily the most awkward actor in the entire film - though they cut out a bunch of the lines from the original giving her very little to work with; it's like they had no clue whether the character was supposed to be creepy, ominous, humorous, etc and the end result is simply confusing and awkward.

Ultimately these changes make you wonder why the hell they even bothered to leave the character in at all. Similarly, the guy who played the character that Eli Roth was in the first movie was absolutely abysmal and awkward beyond belief Roth himself somehow pulled it off, but this guy is not even close.

There's more I could say but I don't feel like wasting anymore time thinking about this movie. Just watch the original and avoid the remake at all costs.
